Avoid These Common Financial Mistakes

From mixing personal and business finances to ignoring VAT deadlines — these are the mistakes we see most often, and how to fix them.

Running a business is demanding. With so much to manage, financial discipline often slips — not through negligence, but through a lack of time and the right systems. Here are the mistakes we see most often, and what you can do about them.

Mixing personal and business finances

This is the single most common issue we encounter with new clients. When personal spending runs through the business account, it creates a bookkeeping nightmare and can raise red flags with HMRC. Open a dedicated business account from day one, and keep all transactions cleanly separated.

Ignoring VAT deadlines

If you're VAT-registered, missing a submission deadline means a penalty. Miss several and the penalties escalate fast. Set reminders well in advance, and consider outsourcing your quarterly VAT returns so the burden doesn't fall entirely on you.

Leaving your self-assessment until January

The 31st January deadline is fixed, but there's no rule that says you have to file in January. Filing early means you know your tax bill sooner, can budget accordingly, and avoid the January rush. We recommend filing between July and October for the prior tax year.

Not claiming all allowable expenses

Many business owners under-claim. If you use part of your home for work, use your own vehicle for business travel, or purchase equipment, there may be legitimate deductions available. A good accountant should review your expenses regularly — not just at year-end.

No financial forecasting

Profit and loss figures tell you what happened. A forecast tells you what's likely to happen next. Without one, you're flying blind. Even a basic 12-month cash flow projection helps you plan for quiet periods, tax bills, and growth investments.
